They kill Moody and Hedwig (Harry's owl) severely injure George, and knocks out Hagrid. During their flight to the Weasley family home at the Burrow, all are ambushed by Death Eaters. Meanwhile, Hagrid and the Order of the Phoenix gather at Privet Drive and escort Harry to safety, knowing wizards are unprotected at the age of 17 in the Muggle world and they cannot apparate or use the Floo Network without alerting the Ministry, using polyjuice potion to create seven decoy Harrys out of Ron, Hermione, Fred, George, Mundungus Fletcher, Fleur Delacour and her fiancé Bill Weasley. Voldemort commandeers Lucius' wand, as Voldemort's own wand cannot be used to kill Harry, because the wands are 'twins.'

Snape arrives at Malfoy Manor to inform Voldemort and his Death Eaters of Harry's impending departure from Privet Drive. Harry, Ron and Hermione prepare for a journey to find and destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes, with Harry watching the Dursleys depart (Petunia for once feels remorse of Lily's death), and Hermione wiping her parents' memories of her. Despite the Ministry's attempt to maintain an image of stability, the Death Eaters have made major gains after Dumbledore's death, committing mass killings of impure-blooded wizards, including Muggles related, and infiltrating the Ministry itself.

The newly-appointed Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour, addresses the wizarding media, stating the Ministry will remain strong even as Voldemort gains strength.
